If you've never heard the term before, "spray skirt" sounds like clothing. It's not. Here's what it actually is and why you need one.
What a spray skirt actually does
A spray skirt is a waterproof cover that seals the opening of your kayak (the cockpit) around your waist. Without one, waves, rain, and splashes would pour straight into your boat and fill it with water. With one, you stay sealed in and dry, while still being able to pop it off instantly if you ever need to get out of the boat.
Think of it less like an article of clothing and more like a watertight lid for your kayak, one that happens to be worn around your waist so it moves with you.
The two sizes that matter
A spray skirt has to fit two different things at once, not just you:
Tunnel size β this is the part that fits around your waist, sized like clothing.
Cockpit size β this is the part that fits your specific kayak's cockpit opening, which varies by boat model.
Getting both right matters. Too loose anywhere, and water gets in. Too tight, and it's hard to get on or take off. Check our Skirt Fit Chart to match both measurements before you buy, since getting either one wrong is the most common mistake newer paddlers make.
Bungee Rim vs. Rand Rim
You'll notice skirts described as having a bungee edge or a rand edge, this refers to how the skirt attaches around the cockpit rim.
Bungee rim is simpler and more affordable, a stretchy cord that holds the skirt in place. Great for everyday paddling and calmer water.
Rand rim uses a stiffer rubber edge for a tighter, more secure seal, better suited for harder whitewater where you need real confidence the skirt won't pop off unexpectedly.
